YORK MINSTER

www.yorkminster.org

Probably the best & most visited cathedral you will find anywhere in the world.

York Minster dating back to the Medieval times has magnificent 14th & 15th century stained windows, stonework & elaborate tombs to view.

There is a shop, superb towers to ascend with fantastic views or you can just sit & take in the splendour whilst having a quite word.

THE SHAMBLES

www.yorkshambles.com

The Shambles is the most visited shoping area in Europe.

The streets are narrow & remind me of (there was a crooked man that walked a crooked mile) rhyme.

Higgledy Piggledy.

The street dates back to the Medieval times & derived it’s name from the deep wood sills at the front of the shops which were called “shamels”.

butchers would use hooks to display there meat & indeed it used to be a street full of butchers & was known as Flesh Shamels.

Shambles or The Shambles as it is now known is a street full of tourism shops & eateries, some say best visited early or late before the crowds, I think best when its at its height midday.

MERCHANT ADVENTURER’S HALL

www.theyorkcompany.co.uk

One of the best preserved timber guild halls in the country, this grade 1 listed building dates back to the 14th century.

Take the audio tour for just a couple of quid (a must)

YORK WALL

Roman built 3 miles of circular wall with towers & keeps to visit, this wall has been immaculately maintained over the years however a lot of the wall is still the original roman built wall.

CLIFFORD’S TOWER

Clifford’s Tower was built by the Romans as a cemetery & rebuilt in 1233 by King Henry 111, the bronze & pottery evidence confirms both Viking & Saxon occupation.

The fun does not stop here, there are ghost walks, fine food resteraunts, ancient pubs, open top bus rides, ghost boat trips, horse & cart rides, many historic houses, cinema’s, night life & of coarse glorious shopping in quaint period shops & extremely modern malls.

If I were asked to sum up York I would quite simply say probably the best non capital city in the world.
