The street dates back to the medieval times
& derived its name from the deep wood sills at the front of the shops which
were called “shamels”.
Butchers would use hooks to display there
meat & indeed it used to be a street full of butchers & was known as
Flesh Shamels.
Shamels or The Shambles as it is now known
is a street full of tourism shops & eateries, some say best visited early
or late before the crowds, I think best when it’s at its height midday.
